| Recorded at the Palazzo Delle Manifestazioni Artistiche, Brescia, Italy. Great audience recording. Note that this is a collection of 2 sources from the same recording, both sounding equally good to me. Src. 1 (Low Gen) : 2 x TDK AD60's, obtained in 1979. Src. 2 (3rd Gen) : 2 x Maxell XLII 90's, obtained early 1990's. 24-96 Transfers by Beechwoods Nakamichi ZX-7 > Tascam HD-P2 24/96 > WAV > FLAC 01. A Saucerful Of Secrets Listening back to circulating copies of this show, it seems to be one of those which was recorded well, but so far hasn't surfaced in a particularly clean transfer. 'Brescia 71', which circulates as a 'first gen' is missing much of the top end, the 2nd Gen is much the same. Neon's 3rd Gen extracts information from his tape that shows what the other two were missing in terms of transfer, but the tape is worn in places. MTR6969's transfer was obtained from the same same trader as Stratcat58's 'Src. 1' but the top-end again is rolled-off. LDB's transfer of RLR's tape is currently considered to be the best. It is against that, and Neon's 3rd Gen that these transfers should be compared. Why two different sources in the same torrent? Initially, it was Stratcat58's intention to just send me 'Src. 1', having passed me samples which showed promise. When he went through his tapes to package them up he decided to send through 'Src. 2' as well. The person he got them from was a fastidious trader, using good tapes, and he thought they may end up better than the original tapes he'd agreed to send on. In the end, with both sets of tapes transferred, we couldn't agree which was best. My preference is for Source 1, but his was for Source 2. Source 2 is smoother, Source 1 has slightly more bite. Both have the top-end that is missing from virtually all of the other circulating sources. This is immediately evident even in the first 20 damaged seconds of Atom Heart Mother - Nick's kit has cymbals on these transfers! RLR's tape has that open top end, and these tapes match that, but with less hiss and a stronger bottom end, a nice sweet-spot until a well preserved, well transferred 1st Gen or Master appears! I hope you'll forgive us offering up a 'double-pack' but both transfers have their own strengths, and sharing both lets you pick your own favourite. Beechwoods August 2015 |
