On 25 September the band recorded: The Gnome, Scarecrow, Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, Matilda Mother, Reaction In G and Flaming (in that order). An aircheck tape of the 1 October session was played on BBC Radio 6 as part of a John Peel retrospective broadcast on 24 October 2005. Most people reading this will have a copy of that rebroadcast. The songs broadcast on 24 October 2005 were: Set The Controls, Reaction in G and Flaming in superb quality. Scarecrow surfaced in 2010 when another 45 minutes of the show came to light on the reverse of a tape Bernie Andrews gave to Ken Garner. Sadly it only circulates as an MP3. The songs on the 2010 version are: Scarecrow, Set The Controls, Reaction in G (which is a few seconds longer) and Flaming. That just leaves us wanting decent copies of The Gnome and Matilda Mother. My tape goes part way towards filling this gap in that it is has a better top end and is clearer than other generally circulating versions. I dropped the weaker channel. The recording has various broadcast noises, such as static, ticks and pops, so I exported my initial transfer from Reaper to WAV and used ClickRepair - automated, declick 60, decrackle 60, simple method; a gentle approach to removing many artefacts. With thanks to goldenband for his speed correction advice - the tape was 1.81% fast and I adjusted my transfer using Élastique 2.28 Pro. It was a slightly tricky one because the band isn't entirely in tune with themselves. It is known that Set The Controls was repeated on the David Symmonds show on 13 November and Matilda Mother was repeated on the same show on 17 November. On 5 November Top Gear was presented by Pete Drummond and John Peel. From David Parker's Random Precision in respect of 5 November: 'Bernie Andrews - 'The Pink Floyd tracks were repeated in a different order: 'The Gnome', 'Matilda Mother', 'Flaming', what I have listed as 'New record - 'Apples & Oranges' and finishing with 'The Scarecrow'. For 'Apples and Oranges' we used the actual single rather than a 'Top Gear' recording. I'd have done a deal with Peter Jenner and EMI about using that for the repeat because they would have wanted the single on the show, and we couldn't record it for the session 'for obvious reasons' (chuckles).'
