From the info file: Pink Floyd 1971-11-20 Cincinnati, Recorder 1, low gen HG tapes (24bit/96kHz) Pink Floyd Taft Auditorium, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA 20 November 1971 Lineage: Low gen Maxell XLII-S cassettes (1996/97) > Technics RS-B565 > Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 > Reaper v4.61 and iZotope RX4 > FLAC (24bit/96kHz) xACT used to create FFP 01 The Embryo 02 Fat Old Sun 03 Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun 04 Atom Heart Mother Intermission 05 Careful With That Axe, Eugene 06 Cymbaline 07 Echoes (cuts) Total running time: 1 hour 58 minutes 10 seconds A clear and bright version of this recording of the band's last performance of 1971, which is famed for its extended version of The Embryo in which David begins to play Breathe, and the last performance of Cymbaline. Both Wright and Waters are taken out by what appears to be a partial PA failure in The Embryo. Partial because at least some vocals are still present, witness Waters's Pow R Toc H vocals at 17:21, but both keyboards and bass guitar are absent. It could also be a mixer failure; something, in any event, that simultaneously takes out Waters and Wright. I made some adjustments to the azimuth for each side in iZotope. It was tempting to add gain to each of the songs, all of which have gaps between them, but I concluded it was better to leave this release relatively raw. A future re-master might benefit from an expansion process to restore some of the dynamics lost when the recorder's built-in limiter kicks in. You can tell that a limiter is at work because of the lack of dynamic range to the recording and slightly 'tin can' sound where the bass frequencies tend to disappear at higher sound levels. Goldenband provided customary expert speed correction advice. Fortunately the pitch doesn't drift during the individual tracks. Side A: The Embryo -2.06%, STC -1.79% Side B: AHM -2.79%, CWTAE -2.2%, Cymbaline: -1.67% Side C: FOS -3.86%, Echoes -3.03% I have heard some people say that they rarely get past The Embryo. I think it's a strong performance throughout and well worth setting aside the time to stick with the concert all the way through. Recorder 2 caught all of Echoes and the Blues encore, which are missing from this source. Howard Gil tapes supplied by pinkrudy / Neonknight tape transfer, May 2016 |
