You can sometimes hear pre-echo or post-echo of tape print through before and after the recorder starts and stops! The empty spaces are the time missing from the recording, approximately... Mastering: Wavelab 5.01b (recording, tracking, and mastering) > Waves Q10 Paragraphic EQ used as a Wavelab plug-in to smooth out some mid sharpness, enhance the low end, and find the highs that are buried on the master tapes. PeakMaster applied to limit any stray peaks. No compression. Edit, November 2016: I began transferring my taper friend Kevin's master cassettes to digital with the aim of helping him post his own shows himself and begin sharing the recordings that he had made. We didn't get around to getting things posted, and recently Kevin passed away. I had this one made and ready to bring over to him so I could show him how to start posting things on sites for himself. It was going to be one of the first, but it never happened. I now share his recording with you in his honour. Rest in peace, Kevin Davie. I wish I could have done this project with you. I now do it for you. I miss ya, man. I didn't know Kevin yet at the time of these two Pink Floyd shows. We didn't meet until a few years later. I was also at this show rolling tape, and have already shared my 'source 3' recording from far back and up top, literally I believe my seat was THE most farthest away from the stage, in row ZZ of the upper level at what I can best describe as the right corner. There was concrete behind me and the roof was not that far above my head. Still, my recording is really pretty good! But, this 'source 2' from Kevin is a lot nicer and sounds like it's got a much closer proximity to the stage and the front of the P.A. system. I can't remember what Kevin's seats were (he did tell me once) but it's gotta be better than my seats were! Hahaha! I think he said he had lower bowl seats for night 1 and floor seats about 2/3 of the way back for the second show, now that I really consider it. He used the same rig as the second night, but the stereo spread of this first night vs. Kevin's second night tapes was much different. I did bring up a lot of the high end of the frequency spectrum in mastering the recording. The ECM-909 mic that Kevin used at this show that I bought from him used a 1.5 volt AA battery. When I bought it, he told me that he rarely changed the battery in the mic. In my tests, a weak battery leads to a lowered response in the mic. If the mic was under-performing, it would explain the lack of high frequency response from them even though they are great cassettes taped on a good deck played on an okay deck that was well adjusted to play them! This is why I believe these recordings don't have all that much top end of the frequency spectrum, even though they are still really good captures of this tour. As the show goes on, I also noticed a certain 'graininess' to the sound, which I also believe is caused by the mic's weak battery slowly dying off. Good thing it also takes energy from the plug-in power, too! This is definitely the best of the 3 recordings from this night that I've heard. Even my 3rd source bettered the originally circulating recording which, well, kinda sucked! LOL. Kevin's recording has guts and presence and depth and balance. Sure there's a few rowdies in the crowd that you can hear, but they were everywhere and nearly impossible to avoid! I hope you enjoy this brand new release some 22 years later, and maybe think of Kevin the taper sitting underneath the microphone that you're listening to! Thanks... audioarchivist@hotmail.com The Kevin Davie Memorial Series This series is in memory of Kevin Davie who died suddenly 31 March 2016. Kevin was an avid taper & recorded many concerts mainly in Vancouver, Victoria & Toronto. All these recordings have been sourced directly from Kevin’s master cassettes. With thanks to Mary Davie, Kevin’s Mother for allowing us access to all of Kevin’s masters. This is a joint venture between DGB, Dennis Orr, Seth Meister, Leif Henderson & John MacMillan. Kevin was a dear friend of mine & helped me greatly when I first moved to Canada in June 1994 for which I will forever be grateful. He had a great sense of humour. He was always happy to remind me of Ray Cooper’s percussion solo that I had to endure at the end of all the Eric Clapton shows I went to in the 90s (there were many!). He did an excellent job in impersonating Mr. Cooper! Kevin had a great taste in music & shared my love of the blues. We hope that you enjoy these releases & that we can continue Kevin’s legacy for many years to come. You left this world way too soon. Rest in peace my friend. DGB Kevin and I had plans to post some of his shows himself. He needed the ratio boost! haha. We had begun to work on some of his shows, when we had a bit of a dust up over something silly. Sadly, we never had the chance to mend fences together. Hopefully, through this series of shows, Kevin's memory can be properly honoured and that he can continue to leave a lasting legacy with the recordings that he left behind. I also hope that when I go beyond this world that my master cassette collection that I haven't gotten to will find a similar new home with trader's and collectors and fans everywhere, too...
