This version of Kralingen doesn't have the distracting low frequency hum that is present on most low gen circulating versions of this concert and the tapes are from a lineage that is in slightly better condition. You'll hear less back ground noise and the music generally feels a bit closer. It's not an outright upgrade, however, because there are occasional flaws in the tapes. An example I spotted is a dip in the sound at ~59s in the introduction to GITC. The recording starts a second or so earlier than the reel-to-reel source that most people reading this will have. Let's call the reel-to-reel version source 1 and hhallste's tapes source 2. I have a confirmed 2nd gen from another collector which also has the additional second at the start (source 3). It sounds similar to this version. I think it is likely that hhallste's tapes are 2nd or 3rd gen. Hhallste received his tapes from Rolf Ossenberg in about 1990. The known 2nd gen is slightly duller than these tapes and they do not have the dip before GITC. This sound quality could be due to the introduction of Dolby in the lineage. To the best of my knowledge Rolf didn't use Dolby unless asked to do so. This is a mono recording. I transferred both tapes at the same level then tried exporting to mono because it can sometimes lift the sound and reduce hiss levels but the results sounded odd. Both the left and right channels are contributing so dropping one of them was not an option. Goldenband drew my attention to the fact that the recording has an issue with gradually increasing and varying speed that cannot be adequately corrected by applying linear song-by-song values. I don't have the know-how to tackle such a problem and goldenband is currently moving home. Impressed by his contributions to Yeeshkul, I sought assistance from tezeta and sent him the raw FLAC files for a gliding speed correction and finishing touches. tezeta: 'First, decoded flacs to 32-bit wav FP, dither off, with foobar2000. Then imported into Audition 3 for adjustments. First adjusted DC bias around the center wave at absolute zero, L/R channels locked, to prep for speed correction. Used the pitch bend/graph tool w/ spline on. The following values were applied. Key: 1 = 1 semitone, '...' means a glide was used. AD -.20...-.34 GITC -.34...-.42 CWTAE -.42...-.76 (tuneups, audience noise before AHM) -.76...-1 AHM -1...-1.85 (tuneups, audience noise)/STCFTHOTS -2.05...-2.4 ASOS (P1) -.44 ASOS (P2, starts with Rick's organ chord entry in Celestial Voices) -.44...-.86 tuneups -.86 IO -.85...-.1.88 closing announcement -1.88 Additionally removed some dead space and a few pops/thumps from Neonknight's transfer. Exported from Audition as 32 bit FP WAV, then converted to 24/16bit FLAC with foobar2000, dither on. Finally, tagged the files in foobar2000. This RevA corrects some issues with the default settings of Adobe Audition kindly pointed out to me by vince666. I also adjusted some speed correction values to be slightly sharper than they were previously, and changed the tracklisting to a more friendly listening format. There was also a missing bit of tuneups from tape B before Saucerful, which I included here. The Holland Pop Festival remains the largest event of its kind in the Netherlands with an estimated audience exceeding 350,000. It is therefore rather odd that only one audience recording of the band has survived. Perhaps we can look forward to more tapes surfacing one day.
