Here are his notes on the recording: ************************** The Final Drum Roll We had no way of knowing at the time that this Christmas show at the Mean Fiddler (by now an annual event in the IQ calendar) would be Cookie's final appearance with the band. It came as a total surprise to us all when he let us know the following month that he had decided to leave IQ after 23 years. He had reached a point in his life where he needed a complete change. I've always maintained that a band is only as good as its drummer and Cookie certainly proved that point. His solid and reliable drumming always provided the rest of us with a confident platform to work on. As a closet drummer myself (as are most singers, I think), I'm a big fan of Cookie's playing and when we played live I took so many of my cues from my drum rolls and fills. He was a very watchable player, too, and during the instrumental sections, I'd stand in the wings and marvel at the way he made it all seem so effortless - always the mark of a great drummer. The idea of a farewell show was suggested, but Cookie didn't want it, he said it wasn't his style so sadly everyone, band and audience alike, were denied the chance to say goodbye to him. This recording, then, is his swan song with IQ. It was by no means our best performance in living memory (I was cursed with the obligatory Christmas cold) but this is how it was on the night. To call Cookie's departure the end of an era for IQ would be a massive understatement. It also marks the end of a significant part of our personal lives. IQ has occupied half our lives and Cookie has always been there, integral to the music and the humour of the band. (Despite our best efforts not to keep quoting Monty Python after all these years, we could never help ourselves.) We all miss him very much but we wish him every happiness in the future. This recording was passed, with Peter's permission of course, to Collected Underground on the 14th of February, 2006. As always, trade freely, never buy or sell this recording. http://launch. groups.yahoo. com/group/ CollectedUndergr ound/ Here is my Valentine's Day gift to the best trading list in the world!
