Recorded at the Palaeur, Rome, Italy. Great audience recording. From the info file: ******************************************************************************************************* Italy 1971-06-20 (24bit/96kHz) **ratpie cassettes** Pink Floyd Palaeur Rome, Italy June 20th, 1971 Transfer Lineage: 2nd Gen Cassette > Nakamichi ZX-7 > Tascam HD-P2 (Wave 24bit/96khz) > Flash Card > PowerMac G5 (xACT 1.62 WAV > FLAC8) Mastering: FLAC8 > Wave 24bit/96khz > Samplitude10 (32bit float/96kHz) > Wave (24bit/96kHz) > CDWave (1.98) > FLAC I know it took more time than anticipated, but it was worth the wait. There were issues with the first transfer ratpie sent me so we found another person, who wishes to remain anonymous, to transfer ratpie's tapes and the results were superb. The quality of the A->D conversion is very apparent. In terms of SQ, this is a definite upgrade to all circulating versions. One million thanks to ratpie for sharing his recording with all of us. ***Littlepieces' Mastering Notes*** This is a stereo recording that was recorded very hot. This suggests that it was recorded on a good tape deck because most cheap decks can't handle high peak levels. The levels bounce around at +5db and peak at +7db. That is the kind of levels you would set for a metal tape. Three of the four cassette sides were running at the correct speed and fortunately did not require a speed correction/resampling. Only the cassette side containing STC and Cymbaline required a speed increase of 1.5%. Interesting to note that this is the cassette side that you can hear a minor bleed through of sound on STC. Apparently, somewhere in the lineage, past content was not completely erased. This bleed through is also on the common 2nd gen. The only editing required was as follows: Removed the dead air at the ends of the cassette transfers and within the recording. Removed repeated segments and spliced FOS and SOS portions from different cassettes. Removed a loud mic thump during AHM. The rest of the mic disturbances were mostly during audience segments and were left in as part of the document. Removed a small dropout near the beginning of SOS. About 1m after the repaired dropout, I left another minor dropout in the left channel unchanged. It would have required a copying of the right channel and likely some gain/EQ changes in order to make it transparent. Its a very minor dropout and I think the type of processing that would be required to fix it is not appropriate for a new transfer release. It took me a few minutes to truly appreciate the nature of the quality of this recording, but it is now trying to make its way on to my short list of favorite shows. 01 (18:07) Atom Heart Mother 02 (02:29) Audience/Tuning 03 (14:19) Careful With That Axe, Eugene 04 (01:04) Tuning/Audience 05 (14:17) Fat Old Sun 06 (11:36) The Embryo 07 (23:23) The Return Of The Son Of Nothing 08 (12:14) Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun 09 (11:54) Cymbaline 10 (00:48) Tuning/Audience 11 (18:39) A Saucerful Of Secrets 12 (00:59) Announcer/Audience 13 (07:22) Astronomy Domine 14 (01:15) Audience/Announcer ** (138:33) ***Some of the Differences I Noted Compared to the Common 2nd gen*** Has 10s more before AHM not on the common 2nd gen. Missing ~2:30m before RoTSoN compared to common 2nd gen. Has announcer before break but not announcer after break. Has 10s more before STC not on common 2nd gen. Missing ~35s before Cymbaline compared to common 2nd gen. Missing ~22s after SOS compared to common 2nd gen. Missing ~30s of beginning of AD compared to common 2nd gen. The Common 2nd gen runs ~2.5% slower. ******************************************************************************************************* |
