| Recorded at the Amphitheatre, Pompeii, Italy. Great collection of alternate mixes of this great recording. From the info file: Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii 1972 Original Mono Mix Collection **This is NOT the audio from the official DVD. The original mono mix version is previously unreleased on the official DVD.*** 'Live at Pompeii' premiered at Edinburgh Theatre in September, 1972. In 1974, the 80-minute version, which included the additional DSOTM recording scenes, hit the screens. This version was released on VHS and LaserDisc in the '80s and became the most famous version. Now you can watch the original film version on the DVD released in 2003, which includes only the new stereo mix audio. Oddly enough, a Japanese TV channel named NHK broadcasted the film on March 3rd, 1973. Since this broadcast was very early, even before the official theater showings, it was the original 60-minute length version from 1972. The same film also received a 1976 Betamax release and a 1977 VHS release by Toei Video in Japan. Those videos were re-released with a change of cover art in 1983, though they still had the same, but re-telecined, footage. I guess truly original 1972 film version has never been released in any other country. The original 1972 film title says 'PINK FLOYD à POMPEI'. The Features of the 1972 mono mix version as Compared to the 1974 stereo mix version: 1) In the intro, there are no heart beat sound effects (perhaps the now-familiar heart beat sounds were actually recorded when the 1974 version was made). 2) No vocal reverb in Echoes. 3) Echoes Part I has a different ending (David Guilmour's guitar sounds different. Was the performance originally longer?). 4) The order of ASOS and OOTD is swapped. 5) In STCFTHOTS, the Chinese gong is louder and Roger's vocal almost sounds like a single vocal mix. etc.. Echoes part II The Betamax re-release was recorded in BII mode with normal track mono audio. The audio comes from a muffled mono optical analog soundtrack on the film; however, it sounds better than that of the other old releases and is, as far as I know, still the best source at present. Echoes part II This is from the first VHS release. Although there are more noticiable flutter and wow than Source 1, this has more high-tone range and a slightly longer beginning part of CWTAE. I guess the first Betamax release in 1976 has the same audio quality though I have not got it yet (it is extremely rare now). Additionally, VHS re-release in 1983. Echoes part II The cassette tape which contains the entire audio of a Japanese TV show 'Youg Music Show' aired in NHK (a.k.a Japan Broadcasting Corporation), 17th March, 1973. I borrowed the original master tape from original taper, and copied it to CD-R. The master tape was repaired due to its terrible condition. The audio quality is not good, but this is rare anyway. The intro got cut because of the short airtime, the sound of wind effect in the ending of OOTD, however, is longer than Source 1 and 2. Echoes part II Live at Pompeii was screened at a cinema for the first time in Japan, and it was at Kichijoji Baus Theatre on 27th November 2010. The film was the 80-minute version in 1974, but the audio they used was the optical mono soundtrack on the film instead of a 4ch magnetic tape, so I could get the original mono mix there. This is an audience recording of the screening. Since many frames of the film reel got cut off because of its deterioration, the audio is jumpy all the time, but Echoes Part II has a longer beginning part. Also, DSOTM recording scenes have a unique mix that sounds different than the Laserdisc release.
