A Music War is dat hij helemaal bestaat uit registraties van optredens, zonder uitleg of commentaar, zonder een rode draad. Live muziek pur sang. Alle optredens zijn live, opgenomen rond 1980, voornamelijk in Engeland en de VS. Ook zijn er live-registraties van The Police , van XTC, Skafish and UB40 , opgenomen in Fréjus, Var , Frankrijk. Om de film te promoten bracht A&M Records een dubbel LP soundtrack uit. De selectie nummers/bands was bijna hetzelfde als in de film maar er waren een klein aantal veranderingen, een aantal acts, die in de film speelden, kwamen niet op de dubbel LP voor (John Cooper Clarke, Chelsea, Surf Punks, Invisible Sex, Splodgenessabounds). Urgh! A Music War werd voor een korte tijd uitgebracht voor bioscoopvertoning door Filmways Pictures, maar kreeg een cult-status in de VS in the 80' er jaren door de frequente vertoning op het USA Network. De film werd uitgezonden op VH1 Classic op 30 Oktober 30, 2006 als onderdeel van 'The Rock and Roll Picture' series. De film is verder uitgebracht op videocassette, LaserDisc, en DVD-R. De filmrechten waren eigendom van de originele producer, Miles Copeland (oprichter van IRS Records en broer van Police drummer Stuart alsook Police manager), en Warner Bros. Pictures. Jammer genoeg zal en kan de film nooit meer heruitgebracht kunnen worden. Een populaire theorie hier voor is dat de rechten waren 'vervallen' omdat het, geflopte, medium 'Selecta Vision videodisc' niet meer bestaat en RCA had had de exclusieve publicatierechten dat de film alleen op deze manier her-uitgebracht mocht worden. En toen Thomson Electronics RCA overnam was het schluss met SelectaVision. Een nog aannemelijker scenario is dat, zoals bij veel andere films uit de 70's en 80's is dat de contracten met de artiesten het alleen hadden over toen bestaande media (Vinyl, Musicassette, VHS, Laser Disc) en dat al die contracten nu weer overnieuw gemaakt zouden moeten worden omdat de media nu oa. CD,, Blue-Ray, DVDs,Wav, WMV, mp3, etc zouden zijn. Dit zou nu een krankzinnig duur verhaal worden (zeker gezien een aantal acts uit de film nu MEGA-acts zijn of grote componisten (zoals Denny Elfman van Oingo Boingo) Om het nog gemakkelijker te maken zijn een aantal contracten met de artiesten gewoon kwijtgeraakt ! Het verhaal gaat dat van elke act drie nummers zijn gefilmd en bewaard tijdens het montage proces en dat Copeland deze allemaal in de kluis heeft liggen. Er is materiaal genoeg voor een 6 uren lange film, met meer dan 100 liedjes. (mochten Copeland and Warner Bros. ooit het plan krijgen het uit te brengen) De uitzendingsrechten werden door Copeland heraangeschaft en Urgh ! is menig maal in de VS op televisie vertoond op VH1 en lokale kabelzenders. De kopieën van het materiaal werden ouder en ouder en door het monteren en aanpassen voor tv werden sommige songs niet meer vertoond omdat ze te beschadigd of verknipt waren. In sommige gevallen (typisch USA) werden nummers vertoond die helemaal niet in de originele film voorkwamen ! Bijvoorbeeld, Night Flight zond meerdere keren een versie uit van de film die volledig afweek van de originele. Bij voorbeeld toegevoegd materiaal van Wall of Voodoo, The Cramps en Alleycats wat van totaal andere concerten kwamen ! In bijna alle versies ontbreekt Gary Numan met 'Down in the Park.' Numan bezat de beeldrechten over zijn eigen nummer en verbood de clip uit te zenden op TV. Sommige nummers van Urgh! komen ook in andere videos en films voor. De Klaus Nomi clip 'Total Eclipse' is te zien in de documentaire ' The Nomi Song'uit 2004. De documentaire 'The Police: Around The World'uit 1982 was ook gefilmd door regisseur Derek Burbidge en gebruikt materiaal uit Urgh ! en ook nummers van het zelfde concert in Frankrijk. Een klein aantal, intacte, filmprints bestaat nog (die in de VS zijn vertoond) en video kopieën die werden gebruikt voor kabel-tv en onafhankelijke filmhuizen. Dit resulteerde in een DVD -R release door Warner Bros.in 2009, ( verkrijgbaar hier ). Het gaat hier om een, per bestelling, aangemaakte DVR-R. Het gaat hier om NIET gerestaureerd of geremastered materiaal. Als enig extraatje staat er een trailer op, dat is het. Er zijn geen chapter indexes voor de losse nummers, maar alleen 10 minuten chapters, wat het een hel maakt om door de DVD te bladeren. Tot overmaat van ramp is het nummer 'Two Little Boys'van Splodgenessabounds er niet op gezet ! De DVD-R is een US only release. Urgh! A Music War was released for a short time for theatrical release by Movie Pictures Ways, but got a cult status in the U.S. in the 80's for years by the frequent display on the USA Network.
