***Neonknight's Notes***

Marbal's cassette of this amazing recording is significantly better than previously circulated copies. The taper's microphones appear to have been perfectly positioned and he seems to have used a professional reel-to-reel recorder. I asked Grolsch for his thoughts on the tape's origins and he mentioned that there was a rumour that it was done by a ZDF employee who used the TV station's equipment.

***Littlepieces' Mastering Notes***

I love this recording. It has so much more depth and realism that the DAT and CDR versions are missing. I am not at all surprised by Grolsch's comment about it possibly being done by an insider with the station's equipment.

This is a Dolby-On recording. The differences in decks often result in the decoding profile varying from the original encoding creating a poor result. So in order to ensure we got the best possible outcome, we tried three different transfer settings: Dolby on-70us, Dolby off-70us, and Dolby on-120us. In this case we decided that the original settings of Dolby on-70us provide the best result given the planned processing approach.

Marbal's tape is a true stereo recording. Like most stereo audience recordings it has a phasey SQ due to sound entering the mics at slightly different times. I used the multiband enhancer to move everything below 260Hz towards mono, varying the amount throughout and adjusted gain as necessary. This really helped to ground the sound stage and build the low end.

I utilized and varied moderate noise reduction settings working mostly above 12kHz and only slightly lower on audience and quieter sections, while being diligent not to encroach on the harmonics.

A subtle but strange phenomonom occurs sporadically throughout the recording but is really only noticeable during some of the quiet parts. The upper level hiss level changes between about 10k-20k. It's as if the Dolby setting is changing or fading since the EQ is not changing. Not sure what is causing it but I altered the NR settings to make it less apparent whenever it occurred.

OoTD has two transfers, the first ended after ~6m and the last was complete. I felt the complete version had better SQ but had some rough almost damaged sounding sections in the first part, so I spliced just under 3m of the undamaged part of the incomplete transfer and the remainder is from the complete transfer.

The track order on the tape was Echoes, CWTAE, OoTD so I put the tracks in the proper order including a 5s segment before OoTD that is actually part of the pre Echoes tuning.

I used a moderate shaped EQ to increase the area between ~1k to 3-4k and sometimes extended the upper end slightly where it began to fall off after 10k. Also adjusted channel gain throughout to help balance the recording output. The recording responded very well to these small changes.

A few segments have over-driven low frequencies below 80Hz which I moderated. I also reduced a few low frequency hums during a some quiet sections and manually spectral cleaned some tics, pops, etc.

There were many micro drop outs caused by damaged segments, mostly ~20ms, and I removed the short piece of damage.

Thankfully, the speed of the recording was close enough, so I decided to not subject it to a resample.

I noted compared to 'Untitled 1st gen', Marbals' recording is missing about 48s of audience tuning before echoes but has ~8s more before audience applause preceding OoTD.
