This is the third version of Gordon S's recording that I have released and it is once again an improvement on the copy that preceded it. One of the finest 1971 audience recordings, Gordon produced a brilliant record of the concert and stratcat58's tape is clearly lower gen than other versions.

I previously said that Gordon recorded on reel-to-reel and his master was lost. That the master is lost is still accepted but I now gather that Gordon used a C-120 cassette to tape the concert. As I mentioned before, Gordon advertised in Trouser Press magazine in the late 1970s and various collectors found him that way, so it’s always possible that more copies of the recording will surface.

Set The Controls is likely to have been placed between Embryo and Cymbaline because of cassette time constraints at the 1st gen backup copy stage. The correct setlist was probably CWTAE/FOS/StCftHotS/AHM//Embryo/Cymbaline/Echoes/ASoS/encore: Blues. There is currently no information about OoTD being played that night.

Transferring stratcat58's tape took three attempts due to its age. I have two matching cassette decks and the tape preferred one to the other and sounded better after it had been played through a few times.

My thanks to goldenband for his precise speed correction advice and to Bert13 for making the correction for me. Bert also removed an analogue click 2m24s into STC.

Stratcat58's tape runs slow but the values change. Goldeband recommended:

Side A: a sliding correction of the entire side, from +3.23% down to +1.63% (from +55 cents to +28 cents)
Side B: Embryo: +1.63% (+28 cents), STC sliding correction from +2.464% to +1.34% (from +42 cents to +23 cents), Cymbaline: +1.45% (+25 cents)
Side C: Blues: +1.63% (+28 cents)

The sliding corrections were really worth it because the drift on Side A, especially, is large-scale and linear. Embryo is a funny one because the middle runs a bit faster than either end of the song.

You might remember me including this quote in my text file for the 3rd gen. In its report about the concert the San Diego Union said: “The Community Concourse was turned into a space ship for two hours last night by English group Pink Floyd. Their music, as strange as their name, was an odd mixture of electronic effects, whispers, screams and breathy vocal intonations, which created a 2001 effect. The group showed great sensitivity for balance and continuity. Each set Floyd played created an overpowering feeling of weightlessly drifting in space. The music was uncluttered and flowing.” For more of this article see Glenn Povey’s Echoes book.
