The instruments are better balanced than most soundboard recordings. Even the audience is mixed in properly. The tape may have come from a mix intended for the video. Either way, it's an excellent recording. There may have also been some audio enhancements on the part of Celebration Definitive Masters. If true, it was for the better. There is almost no tape hiss on this release. There are some popping sounds at various points during Misty Mountain Hop, Since Ive Been Loving You, Hot Dog and The Rain Song. They sound like vinyl clicks. Perhaps they were a result of tape distortion. In any event, they are minor. The audience source used during White Summer comes from an old vinyl bootleg release of this show, Knebworth II (ZAP). It is very good, clear and well balanced. There is very little surface noise and it is spliced in well with the soundboard recording. There is only a minor amount of nearby audience noise in a few spots during White Summer's audience source. The same vinyl audience source is used immediately after Communication Breakdown ends for Plant's ending comments. Comparing this audience source to a prior audience source used for 79 (Antrabata Reference Master), both sources are very good in their own ways. The source used for 79 came from tape as oppose to vinyl. The Knebworth II source has more bass. But neither compare to the soundboard source (naturally). If the 10 minutes worth of audience cheering after Stairway to Heaven and Rock & Roll had been cut, this release could have fit on 2 CD's. (Brian Ingham February 2000) |
