Pink Floyd Night on 6 Music
BBC 6 Music
7-8 October 2011

Total running time 9 hours 28 mins 26 secs

Humax Foxsat-HDR (freesat) > TS file (audio: MP2 160kbps/48kHz) > VLC > MP2 160kbps/48kHz

BBC 6 Music is a digital only broadcast with no FM transmission. Bit rate on DAB radio is 128kbps, DVB-T and Digital Satellite 160kbps. As these are lossy radio transmissions they have not been bloated to flac.

With thanks to b_squared for advising me on to how to ensure this recording is brought to Yeeshkul in the correct format and creating the script to enable me to easily complete the conversion from TS to MP2.

The descriptions below are taken from the BBC website.

There is some material from other programmes at either end of the 'Pink Floyd Night', which I have left intact in my efforts to get this recording to the community as quickly as possible. Similarly, the shows are all in one big file for others to edit in due course because this was the safest way to ensure I didn't miss anything.

19:00–21:00 Now Playing @6Music

Tom Robinson asks listeners to compile a Pink Floyd playlist.

21:00–22:30 The Record Producers Pink Floyd (90 minute extended version)

Richard Allinson and Steve Levine look at the work of Pink Floyd in the latest edition of Record Producers. The programme concentrates on the early days of the band and the development of their sound from the late 60s through to the mid 70s

Amongst the contributors to the programme are Joe Boyd, Floyd's producer for their first single Arnold Layne; John Leckie, who engineered the band's album Meddle; and Clare Torry, whose vocal performance on The Great Gig In The Sky is one of the highlights of Dark Side Of The Moon.

There are new interviews with guitarist David Gilmour and percussionist Nick Mason, and Richard and Steve have access to the original multitrack recordings of some of Pink Floyd's best work from this period. These highlights include the four track tapes of Arnold Layne; their masterpiece Echoes (which began as an eight track recording - but later expanded to 16); the 16 track recordings of Money and Great Gig In The Sky from the seminal Dark Side. album, and 24 track recordings from their 1975 release Wish You Were Here, including the epic Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

Exclusive to the extended version of the programme for 6 Music is an in-depth look at the recording of the song Breathe, from Dark Side Of The Moon; as well as the discovery of an early recording which Steve Levine found by accident hidden on the Arnold Layne tape!

With a few extra surprises along the way, this edition of The Record Producers is not only an unmissable programme for Pink Floyd fans, but also a 'must listen' for any lover of quality popular music.'

22:30–23:00 The Producers Playlist

Steve Levine presents a personal choice of Pink Floyd highlights including See Emily Play, San Tropez from the Meddle album and The Division Bell's High Hopes.

23:00–00:00 Pink Floyd at the BBC

Archive Pink Floyd sessions and live tracks recorded by the BBC between 1967 and 1971. They've all been chosen by the band.
It begins with 4 tracks recorded for the 'Top Gear' program on September 25 1967; Flaming, The Scarecrow and The Gnome, and Let There Be More Light (Neon ed. LTBML is of course from 1968).

Next it goes into 1968 for 2 more tracks also from the Top Gear Show. 'Murderistic Woman(Careful With That Axe Eugene)' was recorded on June the 25th, 'Point Me At The Sky' was recorded on December 2nd.

Next are 3 tracks recorded for the 'Night Ride' program on May 12 1969; The Narrow Way, Cymbaline and Green Is The Colour.
Then its into the 70s with 3 live tracks. The first 2, 'Embryo' and 'If', were recorded on July 16 1970. Then it's 'One Of These Days' recorded on 30th September 1971.

The final track is a Roger Waters demo version of one of the bands most iconic songs 'Money' from The Dark Side of the Moon. This was recorded sometime around autumn 1971 in his home studio, which was in his garden shed. Roger's first wife Judy Trim was a potter, so Roger put some coins etc in a potter's bowl and recorded the effect at home; the cash register came from Abbey Road.

00:00–01:00 Stuart Maconie's Freakier Zone

Ummagumma is a brilliantly odd double album in Pink Floyd’s early discography. Side 1 contains a selection of live recordings and the other a series of suites written and performed by each individual member of the Floyd. Beautiful and quirky it’s perfectly suited to the Freakier Zone!

As part of tonight's Pink Floyd evening, Stuart is flying solo presenting an hour of music from Pink Floyd’s early work including a healthy dose of tracks from Ummagumma and a few words from drummer Nick Mason himself.

01:00–02:00 Desert Island Discs on 6 Music: David Gilmour

David Gilmour is Sue Lawley's castaway. Among his selections are Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Martha and the Vandellas. First broadcast in April 2003.

02:00–03:00 Desert Island Discs on 6 Music: Roger Waters

Roger Waters is Kirsty Young's guest. His selections include Mahler and his luxury is a grand piano. First broadcast in May 2011.

03:00–04:00: The Thing About Syd

Mark Radcliffe explores the life and legacy of Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett - one of the lost souls of British rock music.
