From the info file:

Roger KAOS is back! - Radio WTRS Expanded

1987 September 6 - The Ohio Center, Columbus, Ohio

Two source merge by TacoBurrito

source 1: audience / A [Low]>CDR[?]>WAV>SHN>WAV>tracked with Wave SE II
source 2: same recorder but from vinyl boot Roger Chaos - Radio WTRS

All Wave files tracked and merged >FLAC

No EQ or sound processing on tracks that originated from the SHN source.(Tracks 01-25)

Vinyl transfer by TacoBurrito:

Technics turntable>preamp>SB Audigy 2>Wave Se II

Songs tracked, patched and vinyl manually declicked with Wave Se II

EQ and Vinyl surface noise/static filtering with Adobe Audtion 1.5: sample of the actual record surface noise was used as a noise reduction filter which substantially removed the backround noise and rumble without destroying the music.

DO NOT encode to MP3 or any other format and distribute. If you do Roger will probably spit on you when he sees you. If he doesn't, I will.

Here is the story with this release. Back in late 1987 or early 1988 I aquired a vinyl bootleg called Roger Chaos - Radio WTRS. It was one of the first and few available KAOS tour boots on vinyl. I really like the boot a lot. I wanted to identify the show so I could find a better copy in the digtal world. The record had no indication of the venue and date. The songs on the 2 record set were separated by silence (banded) and all indicators of where the show was recorded were removed. No calls from the hall, no interaction of Roger with the audience and it was missing some of the songs. The track listing was not correct on the cover either. For many years any hope of identifying the venue and date were thought to be hopeless.

Fast forward to 2008. I broke down and bought a replacement cartridge for my turntable and transferred the record to the PC. As I was was removing the surface noise and pops/crackles I discovered there was something unique about the recording which in the end made it possible to identify the venue and date.

First of all I discovered that the song 5:01 AM (The Pros And Cons of Hitch Hiking) was only played during the first 14 of the KOAS shows. Paul Carrack sang the song on the first 4 dates and Waters sang it the last 10 times it was played. Waters sang the song on my record so that meant I really only had to compare my record to 10 shows. One of the problems with this is 2 of the 10 shows are thought to have not been recorded, 1987-08-10 and 1987-08-20.

The second unique thing about this recording is that the song 5:01 AM (The Pros And Cons of Hitch Hiking) also starts out different than what I had been comparing it to. On my record the bass drum beats 29 times before the band starts playing. So as I began to compare the 8 shows that existed I discovered that the bass drum would beat 5 times before the band would start on the vast majority of the shows. Then I found the 1987-09-05 show has a 14 beat beginning. I figured it had to be the following night 1987-09-06 because no other show before the 5th was even close.. BINGO perfect match. Even the guitar solos in all the songs I compared matched up. Success. I have finally found the date the record was made from.

When I first found the SHN files for this date they were 2 huge SHN files. The songs weren't tracked. At first glance I thought I had found a complete recording to replace my vinyl. BUT this SHN version while it contained most of the show it was missing the last 4 songs. I had 3 of the 4 missing songs on my record strangely enough. The sound quality of the record is slightly more muffled than the SHN copy. Using a little EQ with Adobe Audition brings the vinyl close to the SHN source.

So what we have here in this release is the original copy that was traded in SHN, the songs are tracked now with the vinyl merged in about 8 seconds into the song Four Minutes and used for the remainder of the concert. The only song missing from this show now is The Tide Is Turning. The song fades out as it starts on my record so unless the taper or someone with the whole show releases it, this is is the best and most complete copy of the show I am aware of.

notes:
formerly mislabeled as 1987 November 09 - The Civic Center, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Waters clearly mentions Ohio during the show.

MANY thanks to who ever it was that released the SHN version into the wild. Without it the Floyd community would not know where the Vinyl copy was recorded. Now I only hope this sparks someone with the complete version to release it.

MANY MANY hours were spent researching the venue for the Waters boot Roger Chaos - Radio WTRS. I had to locate, download and compare each of the shows to make sure I had the right one.

MANY MANY hours were spent transferring the entire vinyl record and cleaning up the songs so they could be used. I had cleaned up about 35% of the record by the time I figured out which venue it came from. I then concentrated on the 3 main tracks used from the record that I was going to merge. I probably spent close to 40 hours alone cleaning up clicks, pops, crackle, hum, rumble and surface noise. Please enjoy the fruits of my labor. While it is not perfect I think the difference in the sample uncleaned file and the finished file speaks for itself.
